Michael Brown

Michael Brown is based in Charlotte, North Carolina, where he has built a career spanning campaigns, government service, and public affairs. He specializes in lobbying, issue campaigns, crisis communications, and grassroots engagement.

Michael started his career in politics interning with Congressman Jim Clyburn, before working as an assistant town manager in rural North Carolina. Michael served on the 2008 Sen. Barack Obama presidential campaign, after which he was appointed to senior level leadership roles at HUD, HHS, and the Small Business Administration. At HHS, he led Affordable Care Act outreach and engagement efforts. At HUD, he spearheaded initiatives including Strong Cities, Strong Communities, and the Promise Zones Initiative. At SBA, he directed congressional relations, focusing on enhancing access to contracts, capital, and credit for communities of color.

Since his move back to North Carolina, he has worked with major cities on transportation and affordable housing initiative, collaborated with the NC General Assembly to pass the NC Promise Act making college more affordable, and advised then-Gov. Roy Cooper on clean energy legislation. He has managed government and public affairs for clients including Dream.org, Novant Health, Lyft, Lime, trade organizations, public universities, and renewable energy companies.

Michael holds a BS in Economics from the University of South Carolina and an MPA from North Carolina Central University, with certificates of study from Georgetown and Stanford Universities. He has been featured in Who’s Who publications and various 40 Under 40 lists, sits on several nonprofit boards, and is the author of Green Blocks: A Guide to Advancing the Clean Energy Transition in Urban Communities.
